Eight Awesome Ways to Have a Hot Girl Summer

Summer is upon us and we couldn’t be more excited! We love reveling in the sun and playing outside–to us summer equals a time for fun! Jezebel VonZephyr is a huge advocate of every woman having a hot girl summer. But…what exactly is a hot girl summer? It’s the season where someone seizes the day, embraces herself as she is, and unapologetically does whatever the fuck she wants. Sun’s out so fun’s out and we’re here to help you get ready to have your best summer ever! Here are eight tips to help you  start having your very own hot girl summer!

Tip #1: Eat whatever the fuck you want!

Feeling hot is a state of mind. It has nothing to do with what you look like–it’s all about how you feel. And how can you feel hot, confident and/or ready to take on the world if you’re not nourished? Jezebel believes that all food is good food and if eating something makes you feel good then you should eat it and not feel bad about it.

Are you craving hot dogs because it’s BBQ season? Great! Grab the ketchup and chow down on some tasty sausage!

Do you love ice cream? Who doesn’t? It’s hot as fuck outside and ice cream is a delicious and fabulous way to cool off after being in the sun. Why not make it a double scoop while you’re at it?

Are you more of a fresh fruit girl? Awesome! Nothing is better than nomming on some juicy berries that are in season right now.

Having a hot girl summer means that you eat what you want when you want because you deserve to eat foods that make you happy and help to nourish you. Also? While you’re feasting make sure you also drink lots of water. Staying hydrated is a critical part of having an epic summer!

Tip #2: Wear whatever the fuck you want!

We know. We know. This is easier said than done. There is a lot of emotional baggage that comes with clothes. But Jezebel VonZephyr truly believes that every woman should feel free to wear whatever makes them happy and helps them feel confident, especially when it’s warm outside. This step could take some time–we don’t expect a woman to go from wearing sweatshirts and jeans to mini skirts or crop tops right away! (Though we have seen this happen!)

The key is to slowly begin wearing things that make you feel happy, bit by bit. It might start with just wearing a pair of shorts around your house or sitting in your backyard in your adorable two-piece swimsuit.

Get used to the feeling of the clothes you like and notice how they make you feel inside.

Then venture beyond your home in a safe way–maybe go through the drive-thru wearing that cute crop top or wear that swimsuit to your friend’s house.

We know that showing skin or wearing something you’ve never tried before can be a huge hurdle to overcome, especially if you’ve experienced shame or criticism in the past. It takes a lot of courage to say “fuck it, I don’t care what people think, I’m gonna just wear what I please!” But every woman deserves to feel that way. So we challenge you to begin taking the tiny steps to your own personal wardrobe revolution. You might only feel comfortable in that romper indoors right now, but maybe by August it’ll be your go-to outfit when you’re out with friends! We can’t wait to see how your closet evolves and how confident you become in your clothes and skin!

Tip #3: Go outside of your comfort zone.

OK, yes, a lot of our tips revolve around this one. We know how uncomfortable it can feel to try something new and scary. But we’re big believers in going beyond the comfort zone because that’s where the magic happens! When you dare to do something new you learn more about yourself and build trust within you–this is how your confidence grows! Maybe you take that workshop that sounded intriguing or go on a solo road trip. Perhaps you decide it’s finally time to book your own boudoir shoot with Jezebel VonZephyr. Not only will you push yourself out of your comfort zone, you’ll learn to see yourself in a new light, which could really kickstart your own hot girl summer!

Tip #4: Be your own best friend.

Be kind to yourself. You won’t get nearly as far in life if you don’t. Are you talking to yourself critically? Do you have an inner mean girl that judges you harshly whenever you do anything you perceive as remotely wrong or “bad”? Start noticing when you do that–pay attention to your inner monologue and challenge yourself when you notice that you’re mentally beating yourself up. Would you talk to your best friend or little sister how you speak to yourself? No? Well then why do you do it?

You deserve your own love and kindness as much as anyone else does, so resolve to speak to yourself in a more kind way. How can you develop more confidence in yourself if you’re only tearing yourself down? (Sidenote: if you’re really struggling with this, then may we recommend our Soul2Soul session? It can help you start loving yourself in new ways.) If you want to have the best summer ever you gotta believe that you’re so damn worthy of your own love and respect. Make this the summer where you begin to radically love and accept yourself exactly as you are. Then see what magic unfolds.

Tip #5: Create a personal summer ritual.

This tip can help you with becoming your own best friend. Create an easy ritual that you can practice daily that helps you to remind yourself of how amazing and worthy of self-love you are. This can be anything that feels right to you–there are no limits!

Light a candle and repeat a mantra to yourself to remind you of how wonderful you are.

Adapt a theme song and dance to it every morning. (Need a theme song? We recommend anything by Lady Gaga, Kesha or Kelly Clarkson!)

Stretch every morning and thank your amazing body for all of the ways it helps carry you through life.

Draw an oracle card and reflect on what it means to you. 

Journal each night.

Start a list of all of the things you love about yourself and add at least one thing every day.

The point is to do something that feels right to you so it helps you to connect more deeply to your inner you. Your hot girl summer starts with you deciding to pursue a meaningful relationship with yourself–everything else falls into place after that. Because the most important relationship you’ll ever be in is the one you have with yourself

Tip #6: Surround yourself with people who love and uplift you.

Summer is a great time to reconnect with friends and loved ones. It’s also a wonderful time to begin making meaningful connections with people. You should surround yourself with love and positivity in the form of friends and loved ones. Make it a goal to make plans with the people who make you laugh. Make lots of plans with them! Invite them to have their own versions of a hot girl summer with you! Your friends can see how amazing you are and will be happy to remind you of that when you’re not feeling like your best self. Another way you can surround yourself with love and support is by coming in for a JVZ photo shoot. You’ll be met with love and positivity from the moment you step into our studio. We love reminding women of how incredible they are! It’s our favorite thing to do! Doing a session is a great way to feel uplifted and supported.

Tip #7: Carve out time for self-care.

Making changes can be overwhelming–they take a lot of time and energy! So if you’ve decided that you want to have the best summer ever and make this your hot girl summer, you should also commit to some serious self-care.

Make sure you’re doing the basic things like drinking lots of water and getting at least seven hours of sleep each night.

Move your body in a way that feels good to you. (Swimming is one of our favorite summer activities!)

Nourish not just your body with yummy foods, but your heart and soul as well with activities that move you like art walks, books, and/or movies.

We also recommend carving out time to process any feelings that come up if you’re challenging yourself to go outside your comfort zone. Journaling is a great way to do that. You can also rely on your support system(s) if you have them. We’re also big advocates of therapy and diving deep with a professional, so if you have the energy and resources to invest in that, it could be a game-changer in how you take care of yourself.

However you choose to take care of yourself, do it frequently (daily if possible!) and with intention. You deserve to live life to the fullest and have the greatest hot girl summer ever. Make sure you’re setting yourself up for that by taking care of your mind, body and soul.

Tip #8: Wear a crown. Seriously.

The women of Jezebel VonZephyr are big fans of crowns. We love them! We wear them as much as humanly possible. And we challenge you to do so as well. It’s not only fun, it’s empowering as hell. Crowns exist to remind you that you are royalty, you are powerful and you are so damn worthy of all good things. As a bonus, wearing one can help on those dreadful summer days where you’re just not feeling yourself. (You cannot possibly have a terrible day if you’re wearing a glittery tiara.) We are here to remind all women reading this: you are a queen! So wear a crown! Don something that makes your soul sing, whether it’s a blooming flower creation or a gothic masterpiece of a crown. Whenever you’re feeling sad or down, grab your crown and wear it for ten minutes then check in with yourself. How are you feeling? Better? More royal? Fabulous, darling. Now go forth and rule your hot girl summer.
